Comune di Firenze is the political body and administrative power of the city of Florence. Its duties, as provided for in the national legislation, include policy making on mobility, social welfare, economic development, tourism, environment, education and others. Comune di Firenze has also a relevant experience in European policies communication, arising from hosting an E.U. Network Antenna since 1999.
In 2010 the Mayor of Florence joined the Covenant of Mayors with the aim to go beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reduction in CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency, intelligent mobility and cleaner energy production.
It has already adopted an Urban Traffic Plan and is going to appoint the definition of a new plan. The city of Firenze is going to be subjected to many changes regarding mobility, such as the construction of two additional tramway lines, which will totally upset the present urban scenario. The new plan will also regard the concept of sustainability (SUTP, Sustainable Urban Transport Plan), according with the measures indicated by the Covenant of Mayors.
The strategy of Firenze is based on measures which will help to improve the use of public transport as a mean to avoid the excessive pressure of traffic around the city centre through the improvement of the PT quality, to improve the use of the most valuable areas of the city which have an incomparable cultural and artistic heritage limiting as much as possible the access to private vehicles and rationalising the freight distribution, to use advanced technologies to improve the traffic management capacities and to give exhaustive real time information to travellers and PT users.
Moreover, Firenze has decided to bid over the electrical mobility to become a reference point at a national and international level in the diffusion of electrical mobility exploring all the possible applications and developing suitable models for that.
